Recognize Team Accomplishments

Table of Contents

Favorable recognition is something almost everyone values and appreciates, and something managers want to do right.  While it may involve awards and recognition, it must not discourage other employees.  So what is the right way to do it?

When You Manage a Team, Be Inclusive to All

Your team might be large—say 20 or more people—but recognition for each is important.  Too often, mention is made of a team accomplishment and only one or two individuals are referenced.  This leaves others on the team feeling left out.

Remember, when comments include direct eye contact and mention each person on the team, it is far more beneficial than pointing to a slide on a screen that shows the name of each person.

Put the Accomplishment Into Context

Here is an illustration:  If you produce potato chips, saving a quarter of a penny on every bag of chips sold is a tremendous accomplishment. Multiply that quarter-penny by 100 million bags per week over 52 weeks per year, that’s $13 million in savings.

Your example might not be as dramatic, but it can be equally effective.

Share a Vision for the Future

When a group does well, describe what it might mean for the future of the business or for the individual team members.  In other words, help the team continue to move forward and accomplish new goals.  But, you might say, “I am not a polished speaker.”  In that case, do an Internet search for some inspirational quotes.  They can give you words and phrases that have motivated and inspired others.  They could be used to open your comments or in closing remarks.  This quote may help to get you started:

“Throughout human history, our greatest leaders and thinkers have used the power of words to transform our emotions, to enlist us in their causes, and to shape the course of destiny. Words cannot only create emotions, but they also create actions. And from our actions flow the results of our lives.” Tony Robbins
