Concerns About Returning to Work? How to Talk to Your Boss

Table of Contents

Many businesses either shut down or mandated that employees work from home in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19. If you are in this boat, you may find that as businesses reopen, your supervisor will call you back in to work. If you have concerns, you aren’t alone. Both employers and their teams are navigating unchartered waters together during these uncertain times. These tips will help you talk to your boss and ease your mind about returning to the workplace.

Convey Your Excitement About Returning to Work

As stressful as it is to re-enter the workplace, it is just as stressful for your supervisor to juggle helping everyone adjust with new rules and measures in place. Understandably, your employer may be worried about receiving backlash, so starting with a gentle touch will lighten the mood. At the very beginning of the conversation, make sure your employer knows that you are happy to be able to come to work and ready to get back in the swing of things.

Address Your Concerns

Politely explain that you have concerns about returning to work and would like more information to ease your mind. If you have extenuating circumstances such as family members who are high risk or if you are high risk yourself, explain the situation so that your employer has a better understanding.

Inquire about social distancing measures both with colleagues and clients. Will the office layout and employee schedules change to meet the requirements? Ask about protective equipment that will be provided such as face masks and gloves. These should be readily available to all employees as needed.

Lastly, discuss isolation and quarantine measures should someone in the office test positive for COVID-19. More than likely these are plans that were developed before asking employees to come back to work. Your employer should be happy to share them with you and the rest of the office.

Propose Viable Solutions

Do not be afraid to suggest solutions to concerns you may have regarding your health and safety. For instance, if you want to move your workspace or switch in-person meetings to virtual meetings, speak up for what you need. Everyone working together to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the office is beneficial to the company as a whole
